Summary
This is a classroom-based six-hour SCS-certified course in wilderness awareness. It is available from SCS when requested to suit your schedule, with a minimum of 5 student enrollments required. Note that if you prefer learning online, this course is available in our e-learning list as well.
This SCS wilderness awareness program provides safety training for industry workers and the general public, in how to avoid wildlife encounters, and what to do if you unexpectedly encounter wildlife.
Course Content
Whether at work or at play, our diverse natural wildlife can present a hazard, from bears and cougars, to ticks and wasps. Our training program provides comprehensive and engaging strategies for avoiding wildlife encounters, and what to do if you are threatened or attacked.
Course topics include the following:
- How to recognize the signs of bear and cougar activity
- Wildlife avoidance and deterrence strategies
- How to prevent attracting wildlife into your camp or work site
- Proper selection and use of wildlife deterrents
- Practical bear deterrence exercise
As part of the course, you will be given an opportunity to practice deploying wildlife deterrent devices (inert spray and noise devices).
Prerequisites and PPE
You don’t need to complete any other courses or have any prior experience to enroll in this course. You also don’t need to bring along any personal protective equipment (PPE).
