Summary
This is a classroom-based 4-hour course in fire watch, certified by Energy Safety Canada (formerly OSSA), and is available at SCS. SCS partners with Energy Safety Canada to bring you this fire watch training, which is an industry-standard course required on worksites in Alberta and recognized across other industries and sectors.
If you are a worker or supervisor involved in “hot work,” you have to make sure that the risks of fires and explosions are eliminated or controlled. This fire watch training provides you the theory and skills to predict, prevent, and control fires and sources of ignition. This course also includes hands-on training with fire extinguisher equipment.
Course Content
In this course you’ll learn how to protect yourself and your workplace during hot work and be prepared for fire emergencies. Course topics include the following:
- Applicable legislation and standards
- Fire behaviour
- Fire watch planning
- Hot work preparation
- How to use fire extinguisher equipment
You will learn the legislation that applies in Alberta and Canada-wide to hot work and potential sources of ignition. You will get the fundamentals of how fires start, how they spread, and what behaviour to expect once ignition has occurred.
You’ll also learn how to plan for hot work, what steps are undertaken for fire and ignition control, and appropriate supervision of the site. You’ll find out what hazards to anticipate and test for, and emergency planning in case of a fire.
This course includes hands-on training with fire extinguisher equipment using a fire simulator.
Please note:
- Basic literacy and understanding in the language the course is being taught is required
- Students must be on time and present for all course content instruction.
- Course duration: 8 Hours (may continue beyond 4:30 pm)
- Lunch breaks and coffee breaks are provided – Please bring a lunch
Prerequisites and PPE
You don’t need to complete any other courses or have any prior experience to enroll in this course. You also don’t need to bring along any personal protective equipment (PPE).
