Summary
Confined space work involves some of the most critical hazards in the oil and gas industry. This course is offered online or in classroom through the Energy Safety Canada Authorized Training Provider (ATP) network. This training teaches participants to identify, understand and mitigate the potential hazards of working in restricted and confined spaces.
Developed using the Canadian Standards Association’s Z1006-16 Management of Work in Confined Spaces and the Canadian Association of Oil and Gas Producers’ Code of Practice for Confined Space.
Upon Completion
Upon successful completion of the required proctored exam with a minimum score of 70% you will receive a Certificate of Completion that is valid for three years. *Note: the online training will have a proctored examination.*
Designed For
Those responsible for the entry, planning and supervising of confined space activities; and for those administering employees and/or monitoring entry into restricted or confined spaces.
Course Content
Confined spaces can conceal atmospheric hazards, entrapment, engulfment, and many other dangers. Rescue from these spaces is often slow, technical, and difficult. So it is critical to know the potential hazards and how to address them. This course will give you that vital information, including practical exercises.
Course topics include the following:
- Roles and responsibilities of workers, supervisors, managers and confined space monitors
- OH&S legislated standards
- Code of Practice and requirements for developing one
- Identification and classification of restricted and confined spaces
- Requirements for working in or around restricted and confined spaces
- Hazard assessment and control methods for restricted and confined spaces
- Entry planning and permitting
- Atmospheric testing
- Signage and tagging
- Emergency response
In this course you will learn the legislation that governs confined space entry and confined space monitors, including your duties and responsibilities as a worker entering or monitoring confined spaces. You will also find out the classifications of confined spaces and how that relates to worksites using the Code of Practice.
You’ll learn all about the unique hazards in confined spaces, and how they are controlled. This includes determining what classifies as a hazardous atmosphere and how is it tested safely. Related to such atmospheres, you will learn about the use of self-contained or supplied-air breathing apparatus devices (SCBA or SABA) within confined spaces, and what device is best suited for what application.
Entry authorization is also covered, and includes information on how is entry controlled, recorded, and restricted appropriately. You will also learn the steps for preparing for entry including the permit processes on Energy Safety Canada-affiliated worksites. Finally, you will learn about post-entry debriefings, where you discuss what went right and wrong in a confined space entry, and how to learn from success and failures.
Please note:
- Basic literacy and understanding in the language the course is being taught is required
- Students must be on time and present for all course content instruction.
- Course duration: 8 Hours (may continue beyond 4:30 pm)
- Lunch breaks and coffee breaks are provided – Please bring a lunch
