Summary

This is a classroom-based 4-day SCS-certified course that provides entry level rescue skills and knowledge for working on confined space rescue teams. It is available from SCS when requested to suit your schedule, with a minimum of 5 student enrollments required.

This program goes into further detail of areas introduced in SCS’s Confined Space Rescue Level 1 (Basic), while focusing on team building, victim packaging and extraction, mechanical advantage systems, raising/lowering systems, hazardous atmosphere monitoring, and ventilation practices, and team scenarios.

This course consists of both classroom as well as practical field instruction, with an emphasis on hazardous atmosphere monitoring, pre-entry permits, confined space classifying, team skills and victim removal. Special attention shall be given to team and victim safety.

Course Content

Professional technical rescue is a career requiring meticulous attention to detail and procedure, and the best quality, most effective training available. SCS’s technical training division ensures that your rescue training is safe, effective, and provides as much hands-on field practice as possible.

Course topics include the following:

  • Team and victim safety
  • Personal rope skill maintenance (ropes and knots)
  • Introduction to complex rigging systems
  • Confined space communications
  • Advanced anchoring systems, and tripods
  • Mechanical advantage systems (lowering/raising)
  • Team roles and responsibilities
  • Team operations and scenarios
  • Rescue equipment selection, maintenance and inspection
  • Team safety checks, and advanced scene surveys
  • Victim packaging and removal

Successful completion requires passing a written exam and demonstrating practical skills.

Note that this is an intermediate confined space rescue program, which will allow you to work as a rescuer in a support role under guidance of an advanced rescuer. This course is a prerequisite for enrollment in SCS Confined Space Rescue Level 3 (Advanced), which is the technician level confined space rescue program that allows the rescuer to manage a team, mentor level 1 and level 2 confined space rescue team members, and work as a team member during a rope rescue evolution.

Prerequisites and PPE

To enroll in this course, you must be 18 years old, and be in good physical condition. You also need to have proof of successful completion of the following:

  • Confined Space Rescue Level 1 (Basic), and
  • Standard First Aid with Level C CPR.

The required PPE includes CSA-approved steel toed boots, safety glasses, leather gloves, coveralls, and/or appropriate clothing for inclement weather conditions.
